Once in a science museum in LA I was faced with some goddamn set of machines that purported to be able to advise me on how to change my life so as to live far longer than I would ever want to under any circumstances. It asked me my name first and I started right out, told it my whole name first middle and last was one word: Ploon. Then it wanted to know how tall how heavy how old etc you get the idea. I was nine hundred feet tall and weighed seventyfive thousand pounds, age 2. Later on it did a BP and pulse, asked me if I smoked etc, got personal. I lied everywhere. The last installation in the set was happy to state: Hello, Ploon! While you might want to revise your excercise habits and change your diet to take in more protien < I told it all I ate was butter> you are in very good health for a person of your size age and weight. So much for goddamn machines. BTW, true hypoglycemia is actually quite rare. Symptoms frequently associated with hypoglycemia are quite common. The only way to really make the diagnosis is to take your blood sugar when you have symptoms, document that it is low, administer glucose, wait for the symptoms to pass, and recheck your blood sugar to verify that it is higher. About 97% of the time, people have symptoms with normal blood glucose, or have low blood glucose without symptoms - and thus the diagnosis is wrong. Anyway, there are two types of hypoglycemia. The first is low blood sugar all the time. The second is 'reactive hypoglycemia.' You eat a meal of simple sugars - your blood glucose goes up a little bit. In response, your blood insulin levels goes up, up too far actually, so that your blood glucose goes down below normal, you get symptoms, and the same hormones that give you symptoms cause the blood glucose to correct back to normal. There are two ways to treat it: the first way is to avoid processed sugars, and eat regular meals high in protein and fiber. The second approach is to constantly snack on Doritos (or equivalent). Whatever works for you... Yes, and it is for this reason that we can't talk intelligently about the number of UNDOCUMENTED illegal aliens in anyone borough. Because an undocumented alien is not here legally and does not have the correct legal papers he/she is subject to being deported if he/she is caught. So an undocumented aliens have to hide from the authorities. Thus, we have to assume that the number of KNOWN undocumented aliens is just the tip of the iceberg. For every one that we know about, there could be 10 or 20 that we don't know about. I understand what you're saying, it seems that they are making testing for AIDS like a home pregnany test. At least, if someone that's a home pregnany test & finds out they are pregnant, they could more easily deal with that then taking a AIDS test at home & finding out that they are HIV postive. Just think of the problems in that. Actully, worse yet, what if the test is wrong & says someone doesn't have AIDS when they really do or the other way around. I know some lawyers might like that (more suits, I would thing the people would sue the company who make the test if there is a false reading on the test) Date: Sunday, October 27, 1996 3:45pm Forum: BodyShop From: Steve C Msg#: 721419 To: Nightbird Re: Nipples (Reply to #721387, Reply to #721348, Reply to #721322, R*) (1 reply) NI>SC>NI>SC>NI>SC>NI>SC>with this bird, you may be waiting a long time. Perhaps if people saw other gays in the limelight such as Vida and yourself, Hopefully they would realize that you are normal people who just happen to have different tastes than us. Unfortunately the media tends to show the darker side, such as Act Up members throwing the communion host Which we Catholics accept as a symbol of our saviors body, to the floor. Benjamin and colleagues persuaded 14 human volunteers to lick their hands all over and then tested for nitric oxide. They found a huge increase in the chemical. The diet drugs fenfluramine and phentermine were prescribed to 18 million people last year in a combination commonly called "fen-phen," and may have been responsible for a thickening of the heart valves in at least 24 previously disease-free women. "We began to notice that otherwise healthy young women, presenting with this unusual form of valve disease, were also on fen-phen," cardiologist Heidi Connolly said in a statement. The Mayo Clinic physicians found some 24 women with an average age of 43 who had taken the medications for an average of one year had developed cardiovascular symptoms or heart murmurs. "We don't know how fen-phen may cause injury to the heart valves," Connolly said. "We do know that fenfluramine and phentermine alter the way the brain chemical serotonin is metabolized, and serotonin that circulates in the blood can cause (heart) valve injury." The valve damage caused blood to leak back into the heart, making it work harder, Connolly said. Prozac and other popular anti-depressants also work on the amount of serotonin in the brain. Also Tuesday, the FDA sent a letter to doctors alerting them to possible heart problems associated with the drug combination, and told the drugs' makers to meet with FDA officials to discuss possible labeling changes. "These are drugs that should be taken only by obese patients in conjunction with a weight loss regimen that includes a reduced-calorie diet and an exercise program," lead deputy FDA Commissioner Michael Friedman said in a statement. The FDA has received reports of 33 cases of unusual abnormalities in heart valves in women between the ages of 30 and 72 who had been taking fen-phen for as little as one month and as long as 28 months, the FDA statement said. The FDA referred to the Mayo Clinic study, but noted there was "no conclusive evidence of a cause-effect relationship" between the drugs and heart valve disease. But because the valve problems are so serious and the women who suffer them are obese but otherwise healthy, the FDA said it decided to inform patients and health care professionals. The Mayo Clinic said its findings will be published next month in the New England Journal of Medicine, which agreed to allow the information to be disseminated early. Previous research has indicated the fen-phen combination raised blood pressure in arteries between the heart and the lungs in some patients. The FDA said it will keep monitoring the situation, with special interest in information from patients on how much of the drugs they took and for how long, whether they had a history of heart problems and whether they were taking any other medications on a chronic basis. Drug maker Wyeth Ayerst Laboratories issued a statement saying it was working with the Mayo Clinic to develop a rigorous study to examine whether the drugs were harmful. It noted many people taking the drugs were unhealthily obese, the second-leading preventable cause of death in the United States after tobacco, and that some overdo the dosage. In addition, fenfluramine was meant to be taken only for a short time and was not approved for use in combination with phentermine. ) Reuters Ltd. All rights reserved ) FOX News Network 1997. Environment Beats Heredity in Determining IQ, a Study Finds NEW YORK (AP) Nurture edges out nature in determining a person's IQ, according to a new study that also finds a surprisingly important role for prenatal development in shaping human intelligence. In an analysis combining more than 200 earlier studies, statisticians concluded that genes account for 48 percent of the factors that determine IQ. That's less than most psychologists would estimate, said study author Bernie Devlin, and far enough below the figure cited by the controversial 1994 book "The Bell Curve" to undercut its authors' main conclusions. "That number is way too small for their arguments to be of any great consequence," said Devlin, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Devlin's study, conducted with Michael Daniels and Kathryn Roeder of Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University, also found that conditions during prenatal development significantly affect a person's intelligence. That suggests that inadequate prenatal care may explain why poorer people and blacks general ly score lower on IQ tests. "Our study gives credence to that idea, and that in fact is something that people should be concerned about," Devlin said. "Poor prenatal care may have a negative impact on IQ." He and his colleagues report their findings in today's issue of the journal Nature. The statisticians combined the results of 212 earlier studies that compared the IQs of twins, siblings or parents and their children. Then the researchers constructed a set of statistical models, or predictions, to determine which one best fit the accumulated data. The best-fitting model was one that included genetic effects, environmental effects such as being raised in the same or different households and prenatal conditions. Many of the 212 earlier studies had found a strong genetic component to intelligence by showing that identical twins raised apart have remarkably similar IQs. But the new study weakens that conclusion somewhat by showing that fraternal twins who are different genetically also have more similar IQs than siblings. The mere fact that they occupy the same womb at the same time accounts for 20 percent of the similarity between twins, decreasing the relative significance of genes. Even for siblings who aren't twins, being carried by the same mother at different times explains 5 percent of the similarity in IQ. "The implication would be that the in-utero environment has a profound effect on IQ in the general population," said University of Minnesota psychologist Matt McGue. "It will stimulate people to think about prenatal factors in a way they hadn't before." It is already well-known that drinking or smoking during pregnancy can cause decreased IQ in children, and that exposure to lead in the womb can also lead to lower intelligence. There may be other prenatal factors that are important as well, Devlin said. McGue said the study casts doubt on the main hypothesis of "The Bell Curve." The book, by the late Harvard University professor Richard Herrnstein and political analyst Charles Murray, argues that the continued intermarriage of highly intelligent, well-educated people will lead to the development of a two-tiered American society one rich and smart, the other poor and dumb. But that can't come to pass, Devlin and his colleagues argue, because intelligence depends too little on genes. Even the 48 percent number overestimates the influence of a parent's "intelligence" genes, he explained, because in every person synergistic effects arise from the mixing of both parents' genes. Those synergistic effects account for about 14 percent of IQ, bringing the true inherited component down to 34 percent. "A lot of what was in `The Bell Curve' was premised on there being a big degree of parent-offspring resemblance in IQ," McGue said. "The parent-offspring degree of resemblance here may be modest." Murray said in a telephone interview that he and Herrnstein had assumed in "The Bell Curve" that genes account for 40 percent to 80 percent of intelligence. But he disputed the charge that their argument depends on a connection between genes and intelligence. Even if parents pass intelligence to their children through nurture, education and other environmental means, Murray said, a two-tiered system will develop. "The big misconception about `The Bell Curve' is that it's about genes. It's not. It's about the role of IQ in shaping social outcomes," he said. I TRY to do all these things now since they are critical to my weight maintaince. But it is hard for me to keep my craving for sweets and junk food under control. It is something I continually struggle with. At one time I weighed over 200 pounds so you know (a) that I used to have a big problem with my weight and (b) that I work hard to keep my weight at a reasonable level.
