I'm on a limited budget, can only spend 15 to 25 dollars at a time, so I was wondering, how do I know what type of coins to buy which have the best potential of going up in value in about 10 to 20 years from now? For starters, I am going to give and exchange hints on games such as Fountain of Dreams, Police Quest series, Rise of the Dragon, etc. In Police Quest 1, you have to hit the man in the bar with the night stick, so that he won't hurt you. That's the first hint that I am giving on that game. Any other games you may have in mind, such as Maniac Mansion, Zak McKraken, etc., let's talk. If you have a different prg you like to give helpful hints on, then please do. Any software hints are 100% appreciated by all. (Reply to #641205, Reply to #638965, Reply to #638123, C*) (1 reply) Heh. Actually, once he's read my last post, the next lesson should start with points, and continue to the rest of Standard American (faz - the bidding system that most of us in the states use). To decide what to bid, first count up the points of you hand. THe most important number here is your high card points, counting aces as four, kings as three, queens as two, and jacks as one. This number should be somewhere between 0 and 37, inclusive. There are also points for shortness in suits (1 for 2 in a suit, 2 for one in a suit, and 3 for a void (none in a suit)), and points for length in a suit (1 for each card over 4), but the former only applies once you know you are bidding for a non-notrump contract, and the latter only applies if the contract is for that suit or for notrump. The first bidder (ie. the first person who does not say "pass") is known as the opener. You should usually only open if you have 13 or more points (otherwise, you should pass and give the people after you a chance -- if nobody opens, the hand is redealt). If you have 15-17 high card points, no suits in which you have 0(void) or 1 (singleton), and only one suit with 2 (doubleton), you must open 1 NT (if you have a chance). If you have 23 or more points, you must open 2 Clubs, telling your partner that you have an unusually strong hand. Otherwise, open 1 Hearts or Spaces if you have 5 or more of that suit, and whichever you have more of diamonds or clubs if you don't (yes, this means that if you have 4 hearts, 4 spades, 3 diamonds and 2 clubs, you should open 1 diamond). Additionally, and exception to the 13 point rule is that if you have 6-10 points, and 6 of any suit, you can open 2 of that suit (as long as it's not clubs, which is reserved for strong hands), and if you have a reasonably weak hand, but 7 or more of a suit, you can open 3 or 4 of that suit. This is known as a "prempt," and is intended to flumox a set of oppoennets who have higher cards in their hands by making it harder for them to bid. Can you think of a greater call for one's life than to do battle directly with Satan and his minions whenever possible? Personally, I think that is a VERY optomistic view. :) As for Armageddon, well, when the Lord decides to call us all together, I hope I am on the front line. I have a score to settle with evil, and that is no joke. It's ruined the lives of a lot of friends of mine, as well as caused a lot of hurt and pain. Therefore, when the call comes, I hope God hands me a sword and says "Go to it!" What greater call can YOU name for a life? I never cared for fencing--it was always too structured for me, and resembled actual combat very little. Not that I frequently get into sword fights, but I figure if all I have to fall back on is my sword someday, I want to know how to USE it without worrying about the proper stance, etc. :) That, incidentally, is also why I am teaching myself Jeet Kune Do from Bruce Lee's texts, rather than take formalized martial arts lessons. :) Date: Friday, July 18, 1997 11:28am Forum: Hobbies From: Steve Flur Msg#: 739337 To: Sam Beckett Re: Swords (Reply to #739294, Reply to #739257, Reply to #739218, R*) (1 reply) Planning for the end of the world, by what ever name you call it, still sounds very pessimistic to me. Regardless, I wouldn't order a blade through the mail (well, I did order a Letherman through the mail, but that's different), in all likelyhood -- I'd want to test the feel of it first. On the other hand, I can get good, real blades at Pennsic for a lot less than $300, and I even get to try them out first. Remember, most of this "structure" is acutally just a way of teaching your body to drop into a propper (and much harder to hit) stance automatically when you get into a fight, so you can concentrate on what's most important -- taking your opponent(s) out without getting hurt.
