Since I did it for two years in Abilene, Texas at KCDD, KHXS, KKHR, and KYYD. I did both AM and FM radio and had different responsibilities at each station. I worked overnights at the chr station KCDD CD 103.7 and was there 8 months and really enjoyed it. I used to play alternative, techno and other kinds of music overnight and people enjoyed it. At the easy listening station I did freelance work, mostly commercials but it was experience (KHXS). At KKHR an adult contemporary station I helped put music in to the DCS automation system and program it for play. Also did commercials and remotes and ran syndicated programs, like Casey's top 40 and the Fox Kids Countdown and was a board operater. At the AM all sports station I was a producer for a local call-in show based on auto racing. Also ran Texas Rangers Baseball, Dallas Maverick basketball and local sports. I also did commercials, remotes and helped out with P.S.A.'s and anything else that needed to be done. I have plenty of experience and am diversified and am willing to do any format. Would prefer Rock, Alternative, or Classic rock though. Any more questions just ask. I thought it was a Do> "white trash" thing, but I know afro-americans who listen to him, a Do> female social worker friend (in her mid-'50's), teenagers, a former Do> history professor, my brother, etc. I don't think listening to Howard Stern is a white trash sort of thing. I listen to Howard. Sometimes he can stretch things out a bit and that can get a little boring after awhile but people still listen to him. Today January 12, 1996 is Howard Stern's 42nd birthday. Every year he always has a not so surprise birthday party. This year it's at the Plaza Hotel. It's been at the Trump Towers, the Tavern on the Green, and other nice places. Robin Quiver's usually sets up his birthday each year. And every year before his birthday she denies that he's going to have a surprise birthday party. But this has been happening for about 20 years now. I am not of low intelligence and neither is my fiance. Rey used to work at K-Rock as an intern when it was the Classic Rock station. He was also in Howard Stern's New Years Eve show. I think the reason Rey and I listen to Howard is because we were both in radio. Howard has done a lot to change the radio business. He has stretched the boundaries of radio and I can understand why some people wouldn't like Howard, their afraid of what their children are listening to and sometimes he can be a little explicite. Well I have stated before and I'll state again by the time your children are interested in listening to Howard, they probably have done the things that Howard talks about. As for them immitating him...yes the language is explicite but I've heard language from teenagers as I was growing up and we didn't have Howard around. If they're going to say what he says they'll do it regardless. If you think that taking Howard off the air will take care of the problem it won't. The problem will still be there. But these are just my opinion. And here you are free to express your opinion on what you think is good and bad. I like learning what people listen to. It's all apart of learning so we know what people want to hear. Thanks to our sysops for creating an area for radio. I've been in radio for about 5 1/2 years, starting with an interniship at K-Rock. I did some work for the Stern radio show and some of the TV specials and shows. I got a job in Abilene, TX (of all places) and did overnights at a lousy station that nobody listened to. In a year, I was doing a morning show at a not so lousy station that a few people listened to. Actually, it was a popular station. I was also Promotions Director and Production Director. All this for $5 an hour!! You too can be a star! Anyway, I was going broke and left TX. I came back to New York with alot of debt, experience, and Erica. I'm working at a commercial recording studio right now and looking for some part time radio production work or voice-over work. But enough about me... let's talk about Howard. I've got great respect for what he does and what he's accomplished. He isn't for everybody, but I think most people listen with half an ear and a closed mind. Howard doesn't waste his energies solely on putting people down. He spends alot of that time making fun of himself, too. Alot of what he says is in jest and should be taken that way. And only that way. He doesn't feel he has to explain himself, and if you listen enough, you start to "get it". If you just find him boring (not necessarily offensive), I can understand that. It's easy to get bored, but it's equally as easy to get drawn in. They used to be the classic rock station here and now they are modern rock and alternative. I was wondering what people think about this. I like it but I miss some of the older music. In general I listen to the kind of music they play on the. Now there are four stations that sound similar...except for one factor..right now K-Rock doesn't have any jocks on their station. Eventually they will or they'll put the old jpcks back on but for now you hear music and commercials. The business aspect is the target for those who listen and those who can buy airtime for commercials...if ya thinka bout it ..Krock has got a decent morning 6-11am department.. But it doesn't draw the listeners in afterwards...you can play classic rock all ya want but it's not gonna be drumming up new blood in ad sales. Second thought...Yes the world has changed...remeber back in about 1991 or make that 1992 or so the music charts in the album catagory was dominated by the Hard rock and metal ...with Metallica and Skid Row and then Guns N Roses' double concept album .. Stations played hard rock and metal...Remeber Z-rock...the only station taht played hard and metal music on the Am..and I mean frequency..what was it..1450..or something.. then all of a sudden it died out ...and a new station came aroudn a few years after..Q104.3...which was before...a country station..holy cow..and 103.5 used to be WAPP funny...now the music scene is geared at R&B and alternative.. guess this means classic rock stations will change their classic format to alternative and Pop 40 formats.. Nothin wrong with that but...the day Q104.3 changes to AC format then Im not listening to the radio for ayear Date: Sunday, January 28, 1996 1:25pm Forum: OnTheAir From: Rey Anthony Msg#: 670834 To: Johndrake *EXEMPT* Re: WXRK 92.3 K-Rock (Reply to #670601, Reply to #668458) (1 reply) Z-Rock (WZRC) was on 1480 AM. I used to work there, too. They now carry Radio Korea which Infinity Broadcasting leases to them. Technically, I still work there. It was an exciting format to work for, but it was hard to sell. Z-Rock had it's core audience, though. A small one. No matter how much you like the music, AM is AM and it's a shitty format for anything other than News/Talk/Sports. BAI relies on air personnel who love the medium enough to do it for little pay if any, generally the only people who get paytime from the station are the engineers and a few others who have to be there even if they arent in love with the Air. RPM is not only a man whose words I like to see and hear in whatever setting but also a classic individual who can do something I have no capability for, the open discussion in real time. I always give him all possible Good Morning Hello whenever I find the context reasonable to do so and I even disagree with him sometimes. I listen to WBAI, it is the best one in NYC most of the time. I spend practically all my conscious time with the radio if not more than one radio. Broadcast radio for me sees BAI as a gem, followed by WFDU and WFMU and the news/talk ragchews its gonna snow like hell this week and git off my phone etc. Quote unquote alternative music outlets figure in there too, but they are pop muzik the same as Hot 97 and little different once it comes down to it. Did I mention WNYC on the AM side? If not, well now I did. Plus the Daily Pooze and the Pustule but thats paper, thing is, I like to get information and opinion from as many sources as I can hit. Howard Stern carries the station, no matter what kind of music they play. Between the two, they may have an immediate increase, but like 'KTU, what about the long run? Will people who listened to the old format join the others who turned the dial after Howard ends his show each day? If not, will they stay with the new music on a different station? Z-100 and 'PLJ had this kind of thing going in the '80s, where both had the same format, but one was better at it than the other. With so many stations now jumping on the bandwagon, maybe 'KTU, 93.1 "Suave" and other "unique" stations are giving people something they never really had - distinct choices. Just as 'BLS and KISS cater to the urban market - successfully - these stations could reach their markets in a way "new rock" stations can't. "Suave" puts a bilingual spin on the Hispanic market, hoping to make them more attractive to the advertisers. 'KTU has a triple market: dance, nostalgia and the difference of not playing the same angst/bleak/violent music of the other stations. More to the point, 'KTU could reach a big market - 18-49 - who would like an alternative to what's out there...problem is, like you said, for how long?? "!": Add the 20-year nostalgia wave factor, and these people might catch a little lighting in a bottle... If a station expanded its playlist to really reach a wide band of people, I think the advertisers would have a fit - they couldn't just be happy with reaching everybody, they'd have to have a "target market" to work form. You saw it with VH-1...they had a great variety of music (especially with its "Sunday Brunch", where you saw - yikes! - JAZZ videos!!!), but they wanted to reach a certain market, and cleaned bouse. Now what you get is "MTV Lite"... "!": Too many stations live and die by the playlist...too bad. There's much too much great music out there just waiting to be heard. Large cities have this thing that they have to be the ruler of "some market", leaving the small town or college stations to be the ones to be the daring ones. Large stations are too worried about losing listeners - playing it safe - instead of trying what your station in Abelene did. It shouldn't be hard...stations here have been bought and sold recently as fast as 9th Avneue hookers, but no one wants to try to reel in the whole city at once.
